Halloween Art Project for Upper Elementary

If you’re looking for a fun, engaging, and standards-related art and writing project – then I’ve got you covered!
I am always trying to find ways to get my upper elementary students engaged in writing. One way I did that during my favorite time of year (Halloween) was by getting them to create a haunted house first and then write about it.
Take a look at the steps below for how to create the haunted house art project with your students. Then you can read more about the writing lesson and how it’s a great addition to the art project.

Art Project Steps

You’ll need the following supplies:

Step 1

Start with white paint and paint a circle.

Step 2

Use another color (blue, purple, or turquoise) to continue painting.
Mix it with white to keep it light.

Step 3

The circles will get darker and darker as you go out to the edge of the paper.

Step 4

You’ll have to copy a black haunted house outline onto yellow construction paper. This will give light to your house’s windows!

Step 5

Cut out your haunted house outline. Glue it onto your painting.

Step 6

Use the black marker or black pastel to draw birds flying over the house. Also draw a tree and a tombstone.

Now for the writing part!

I guided my students with a direct instruction lesson on writing a descriptive paragraph. They needed to write a paragraph that described the house in order to sell the house. They had to take the spooky and creepy parts of the haunted house and turn them into positives to sell the house.

You can grab my Haunted House lesson plan and other writing templates in my shop.

Your kids will have a blast with this! Paste both the painting and the writing on black construction paper. Display and enjoy!
Happy Halloween!
