6-word stories are a great way to engage your students in understanding the content they’re learning. The best part is…you can use them with your students across content areas! They’re so versatile.
6-word stories are a description of a person, event, or work of art in 6 words. They must only contain 6 words and they should be connected in a way that tells a story and makes sense. Students can play around with punctuation when they’re writing, too. It’s important that a 6-word story explain the big or main idea of what students are describing.
Example: Pumpkin lattes. Spice and leaves. Fall!
Here are some ways you can use them in other content areas.
Social Studies
Use them to have students describe a major event or important person in history. Relate them to your Social Studies grade level standards and have students draw a picture to go with their story.
Science
If students are making claims based on what they’re studying in science, have them turn their claim into a 6-word story. Students could use these during partner talk and you can use their stories to make a fun bulletin board.
Math
Engage your students in solving math problems by having them write a 6-word story about how they solved it. They can even use 6-word stories to explain a math concept or what math means to them.
Language Arts
Use 6-word stories to write about story characters, themes, or predictions. Students can draw pictures to go with their stories or they can write a series of stories that go with a novel you’re reading as a summary of each chapter.
