💫3 Ways to Support Multilingual Learners (and ALL Students!)💫

These strategies are designed to support multilingual learners, but here’s the secret—they’re just good teaching! Everyone in your classroom can benefit from these tools:

1️⃣ Provide language and sentence frames: Language frames help students tackle specific academic tasks like compare/contrast, cause/effect, or making predictions. For example, use frames like “One similarity between ___ and ___ is ” or “ causes ___ because ___.” These frames build confidence, promote structured thinking, and guide students in using academic language successfully.

2️⃣ Model using academic language: Show your students how to use high-level academic words, especially for language functions like justify, analyze, or persuade. For example, you might say, “To justify your answer, you can start by saying, ‘The data supports this conclusion because...’” Modeling how to use these words in context helps students become more comfortable with them in their own speaking and writing.

3️⃣ Use graphic organizers to support understanding: Tools like T-charts, Venn diagrams, or flowcharts help students organize their thinking and make connections. For example, a cause-and-effect chart can help students see relationships between ideas, while a sequence flowchart is perfect for summarizing a story or process. These visuals are especially helpful for multilingual learners but also benefit students who learn best through structure and clarity.

💡 Why does this matter? These strategies create a supportive and inclusive environment, making content accessible for multilingual learners while enhancing comprehension and engagement for every student in your classroom.

Earlier this week, I hit 39—and if the life expectancy stats are right, I’ve officially entered midlife! 🤣

Some thoughts as I wrap up my thirties:
🥂Realization #1: I still don’t feel like a “real adult.” Anyone else?

🥂Realization #2: My skincare routine takes way longer than it did in my twenties…and I’m still probably doing it wrong!

🥂Realization #3: Grateful doesn’t even cover it. My family, friends, and all the little everyday moments? Pure blessings.🩵

🥂Realization #4: I should probably stop saying “someday I’ll try that” and actually DO it.

Here’s to embracing every messy, funny, and beautiful moment of this new chapter! 🥂💫

Thank you to all veterans for your courage, sacrifices, and dedication in protecting our country. 🇺🇸

This is my brother-in-law, a two-time Purple Heart recipient who served with distinction during his tours in Iraq. For several years, he visited my classroom on Veterans Day to share his experiences with my students. 🥰 This photo captures one of his first visits with my third graders—an unforgettable moment that brought the meaning of service to life.

As a teacher, I’ve always felt it’s essential to help students understand the significance of Veterans Day and the importance of honoring those who serve.

The first of my DI in 1-Minute Series! 🤩

Here’s a one minute version of a direct instruction lesson on teaching the standard algorithm for long division. ➗ 😎

1. Start with an engaging hook.
2. State the learning objective.
3. Give students the big idea…why is this skill important? This is also a good time to share the success criteria contected to the lesson.
4. Model the skill for your students! Complete on example, using metacognition. Then state the steps and complete another example.
5. Give students examples to practice and provide feedback. Have them complete problms on a whiteboard and share with their partners and whole class. Provide feedback and positive reinforecment.
6. Close the lesson by asking students to restate the learning goal to a partner and make sure to have them complete an exit ticket.
7. Assign independent practice and call back a small group for reteaching and/or extension, as needed!
