One of my favorite activities to teach in March is

One of my favorite activities to teach in March is the idiom “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” 🦁❄️🐑

We read, discuss, write, and create an art project to help students understand both the idiom and the changing seasons.

Lesson Idea:👇🏻

📖Read & Discuss – In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb by Marion Dane Bauer is a great read-aloud with beautiful illustrations. If you don’t have a copy, there are read-aloud versions on YouTube.

📝Chart It – As we read, we record students’ thoughts on chart paper, dividing it into two sections: Lion and Lamb. We discuss how these characteristics represent the transition from winter to spring.

📊Sort It – Students cut and sort seasonal phrases into the Lion (Winter) and Lamb (Spring) categories.

✏️Write It – Using the word sort and anchor chart, students write a Diamante poem comparing winter and spring.

✂️Create It – Students make a lion and lamb craft to display their work. These projects are perfect for hanging around the classroom.

For upper elementary teachers, this is a great opportunity to pair with a primary buddy class. Older students can help younger ones with the sorting, writing, and crafting activities.

I got this GREAT idea from a 6th-grade teacher friend of mine a few years back and I am in love! 😍⁠

It’s a Classroom Book Club.⁠
⁠
Here’s how it works.

I chose a weekday that worked best for my class and I had my students join me for lunch on that day. 📚 During eating time at lunch, my students who wanted to be in the book club came and ate lunch with me. We talked about the book we were reading for our book club. They had to read assigned pages at home to be prepared for our weekly meeting. I purchased the books for our book club from the $1 book of the month through @scholasticbookclubs. I usually had enough bonus points to get each student in the book club a copy. 👌🏻⁠

The first year I did this, I had 19 out of 25 students sign up to be a part of our lunchtime book club. ❤️ ⁠

It was such a great way to build community. 😍

Something I did to accompany the Wrinkled Heart id

Something I did to accompany the Wrinkled Heart idea was to use it with a story I wrote called “Troy’s Bad Day.”

Here’s how I taught it: 👇🏻

I read the story to my students as they sat on our reading carpet and listened. For the first read aloud, I asked students to listen and try to identify the problems the main character, Troy, was having.

After reading it, I asked for volunteers to share their ideas and I wrote them on an anchor chart.

I read the story a second time, and this time, I told my students that we would pause and fold a piece of the paper heart every time something negative happened to Troy.

I modeled it first and thought out loud as I folded the heart. My students soon caught on and raised their hand every time they heard a problem and told me we needed to fold the heart.

At the end of the story, students saw the heart was small and folded. We talked about what that meant for Troy. Again, I wrote students’ ideas on the anchor chart.

We slowly unfolded the heart and I asked students what they noticed about it. We talked about the folds and what it symbolizes for someone’s actual feelings. We talked about the idea that you can really leave a negative impression on someone’s heart with your unkind words and actions.

We talked about the actions of the other characters and how it contributed to Troy’s wrinkled heart.

We read the story a third time, and this time we came up with ideas on what the other characters and Troy could have done to make things better. I also wrote their ideas on the chart.

When we were done, each student got a smaller paper heart and they wrote one thing they could do to make a positive impact in someone’s life.

This is a great February activity that can help you build a positive classroom culture.

Managing classroom behavior is one of the toughest

Managing classroom behavior is one of the toughest parts of teaching. But the key isn’t punishment—it’s consistency, logic, and understanding. ✨

One mindset shift that changed everything for me was seeing behavior as a learning opportunity rather than a problem. As Tom Herner says:

“If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… teach or punish?”

So, what if we taught? That’s where logical consequences come in.

✅ Relevant – Connected to the misbehavior
✅ Reasonable – Proportional and fair
✅ Respectful – Focused on learning, not shame

For example, if a student misuses materials, a logical consequence is temporarily losing access to them—not missing recess. Logical consequences help students reflect, take responsibility, and make better choices next time.

Here’s how this discussion routine works: Give

Here’s how this discussion routine works:

Give students a fiction or nonfiction passage to read.
Before they read it, tell them a prompt they will be answering after the read the passage. Create a question that is aligned with a language function (compare/contrast, opinion, cause/ effect, etc.). You can have them write it on post-it note, or you can write it on the board. If you use my Discussion Cards, you can type it write into the editable file.

Read the passage as a whole group, repeat the question, and have students go back and read the passage again on their own - this time annotating details that will help them respond to the question.

Then tell students to use the language frames to answer the question. Make sure that your language frames align with the language function you used in the question. My Discussion Cards have templates for the different language functions.
After students have time to write down their answers, have them share their answers with their A/B partners.

Then ask for volunteers who’d like to share with the class!
Repeat these steps while reading the same passage. You’ll start to see how many students want to volunteer and how much their writing and speaking improves.
