3 Ways to Support Multilingual Learners (and ALL Students!)💫

These strategies are designed to support multilingual learners, but here’s the secret…they’re just good teaching! Everyone in your classroom can benefit from these tools:

1️⃣ Provide language and sentence frames: Language frames help students tackle specific academic tasks like compare/contrast, cause/effect, or making predictions. For example, use frames like “One similarity between ___ and ___ is ” or “ causes ___ because ___.” These frames build confidence, promote structured thinking, and guide students in using academic language successfully.

2️⃣ Model using academic language: Show your students how to use high-level academic words, especially for language functions like justify, analyze, or persuade. For example, you might say, “To justify your answer, you can start by saying, ‘The data supports this conclusion because...’” Modeling how to use these words in context helps students become more comfortable with them in their own speaking and writing.

3️⃣ Use graphic organizers to support understanding: Tools like T-charts, Venn diagrams, or flowcharts help students organize their thinking and make connections. For example, a cause-and-effect chart can help students see relationships between ideas, while a sequence flowchart is perfect for summarizing a story or process. These visuals are especially helpful for multilingual learners but also benefit students who learn best through structure and clarity.
